ghostrules

Know exactly what your AI agent reads — and approve every change to it.

A CLAUDE.md that looks clean imports a file that imports a file with a hidden instruction; ghostrules finds it and shows the chain

ghostrules finds the instructions your AI agent sees but you don't: hidden text and risky settings in AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, Copilot instructions, skills and MCP configs. A CLI, a GitHub Action and a pre-commit hook.

In 1,583 popular repositories: 44.4 % target two or more AI tools, 16.3 % of root CLAUDE.md files are over 200 lines, 33.3 % of MCP setups run unpinned packages and 6 repositories carry hidden Unicode. Read the study →

Install and run

pipx install ghostrules # or: pip install ghostrules (Python 3.10+)
uvx ghostrules scan . # or run once without installing
ghostrules scan . # exit 1 on findings at or above "high"

Try it in your browser → Paste an AGENTS.md, drop a folder or name a public repo. It runs the real scanner in the page: your files never leave it.

Why

AI coding agents load instruction files from your repository and follow them, and a reviewer cannot see everything in those files. Unicode tag characters render as nothing but spell ASCII text models can read ("ASCII smuggling"); variation selectors carry bytes behind one visible character (Butler); bidirectional controls show text differently from how it is parsed (Trojan Source). Hidden Unicode in rule files has steered Cursor and GitHub Copilot into writing malicious code ("Rules File Backdoor"), and MCP servers can be set up with hardcoded tokens, unpinned packages or plain http:// (tool poisoning). ghostrules makes this visible in the terminal, in CI and in GitHub's Security tab. It only reads files: it never executes what it finds, never uses the network, and prints secrets masked (ghp_****…a1b2).

What your agents actually read

A scanner with a fixed list of file names misses how agents build their context: CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md import files with @path, instruction files stack along the directory tree, rules are conditional (paths:, globs, applyTo), and agents transform what they read (Claude Code strips block-level HTML comments). ghostrules context models how each agent loads its files, scans exactly that, and follows imports with the chain that leads to each finding.

Hidden Unicode

The oldest trick is still the best one: an innocent-looking AGENTS.md that carries an instruction only the model can read. ghostrules decodes it, scans the decoded text again and reports it one severity higher. reveal shows every invisible character as a visible token, and clean removes exactly what the Unicode rules flag.

ghostrules finds an instruction hidden in an innocent-looking AGENTS.md

$ ghostrules reveal AGENTS.md

Review every change to what your agents read

ghostrules lock writes a deterministic .ghostrules.lock: every file in each agent's context, how it is reached, and a hash of the text the agent really receives. In a pull request, lock --check shows what changed with the invisible characters revealed. It is a visibility control, not a barrier (the lockfile is in the repository too): put it in CODEOWNERS.

$ ghostrules lock --check

How we test precision

A scanner that cries wolf gets switched off, so precision is measured, not assumed. Every week a workflow scans 300 popular public repositories with agent files (corpus/, the only part of the project that uses the network) and fails if a critical or high finding has not been reviewed. Each false positive found that way became a test and a rule change. On the first run 0.2.1 reported 84 critical and 156 high findings; 0.3.0 reports none critical and 53 high, all reviewed.

The same tooling scanned 1,583 repositories for a study of what popular repositories tell their AI agents: aggregates only, no repository is named next to a finding, and every number comes from the CSVs in study/data/. ghostrules is a set of heuristics, not a proof: see the limits.

Documentation

  • Usage guide: every option, exit codes, context and lock in detail, Action inputs, supported agents and files, configuration and suppressions, FAQ, limits and roadmap.
  • Rules: every rule, with severity, logic and true and false positive examples.
  • Agent models: how each agent loads its files, with links to its documentation.
  • Study report and corpus: how precision is measured.
  • Changelog and design decisions.

Contributing, security, license

  • Contributions are welcome: see CONTRIBUTING.md (adding a rule takes three steps; adding an agent model takes one module and one section of docs/AGENT_MODELS.md).
  • To report a vulnerability in ghostrules itself, see SECURITY.md.
